Pet Industry Federation Codes

PIF · Pet Industry Federation

The UK pet-industry trade association whose codes and standards support boarding and pet-care operators above the statutory floor.

01 What It Is

The Pet Industry Federation is a long-standing UK membership association for pet businesses, and it incorporates the UK Kennel and Cattery Association. For boarding and animal-care operators it provides codes of practice, guidance and support, sitting on top of the statutory licensing every such business must already hold.

02 What It Covers

Its codes and guidance address the practical running of a boarding or pet-care business, among them enclosure and housing standards, health management, contracts and staff competence, alongside member benefits such as sector-specific insurance and template documents. They are framed as good practice for members rather than as a legal requirement.

03 How It Is Checked

Membership and compliance with the codes are voluntary. The Federation is a trade association, not a statutory regulator or an accredited certifier, so its codes operate as a marker of professionalism above the legal minimum rather than as an independently audited certification. The statutory check on a boarding business remains its local-authority licence.

04 Why It Matters

Statutory licensing sets the floor for boarding in the UK, but it is only a floor. A trade body’s codes give operators a fuller account of good practice and give owners an additional signal, beyond the licence, that a business has chosen to align itself with sector standards rather than do only the minimum the law demands.
